A Visit To Brougham Hall

This week we were privileged to visit Grace Forge at Brougham Hall near Penrith. This is where the sculptor Ellie Barden and her team have been crafting a magnificent Limousin bull called Sol. The sculpture, which weighs 4 tons and stands 5m high, is one of three commissioned by Cumberland Council for the new Carlisle Southern Link Road, to celebrate the strong agricultural identity of the region.

Within the next few weeks Sol, who is made of heavy-gauge steel, will take his permanent home on the new roundabout at Brisco at the start of the new route. In time the steel will weather to an orange tone, just like the Limousins’ coat.

Ellie Barden was inspired by the Limousin bulls which reside at A.W. Jenkinson Farms’ Whinfell Park near Brougham, in particular by Graiggoch Rambo, an exceptional bull who smashed the world record for his breed when he was bought in 2022.
